Child sexual abuse is a crime that is committed every day, in every racial, economic, ethnic or religious group, and in every kind of community. And it is not, as some people think, a crime committed by a stranger. It is – first and foremost – a crime of opportunity. That’s why 90 percent of child sexual abuse cases are committed by someone known to the child, often someone they feel they can trust – a family member, babysitter, caregiver, neighbor or friend.

Without intervention to protect and help the child, the pattern of abuse can be repeated for generations. The HERO project wants to put an end to that cycle of abuse.

We can’t achieve this goal alone. What can you do to help spread the message about HERO, and restore the childhoods of young victims of child sexual abuse:

• Educate yourself about child sexual abuse, including the risk factors, warning signs and steps to take when you suspect abuse;
• Don’t be afraid to speak up when you see inappropriate behavior;
• Share your knowledge. Talk to family and friends about child sexual abuse, and the HERO project. Encourage others to do the same;
• Download and print HERO Project materials from this Web site, and distribute throughout your community.
